Could you give a few information about yourself and your scientific background, including previous studies and obtained degrees?
I am originally from Canada, where I obtained a BSc. in Geological Engineering at Queen’s University followed by an MSc. in Engineering Geology at the University of Leeds. Additionally, I hold a BEd. in Primary Education and have been working in science education for the past 5 years. I recently completed a second MSc. in Science Communication and Public Engagement at the University of Edinburgh.
Could you provide details about your scientific research, and previous projects, listing your key expertise and skills?
I have quite a varied academic background but a common theme that runs throughout is a desire to engage with a variety of publics within the scope of science education. I have experience working with people of all ages, within both formal and informal learning environments, across a variety of scientific topics. I am particularly interested in how to pitch scientific content to make it interesting and relevant to different audiences, as well as how to incorporate local and traditional community knowledge into scientific research.
What was the motivation for joining the Eco2Wine project?
I am excited to join the Eco2Wine project because of the recognition of the importance of a multi-disciplinary approach to sustainable viticulture. I was also drawn to the opportunity to collaborate with, and learn from, communities and researchers across South Africa and Europe.
What is the motivation and aim of your PhD project?
My project has three main goals: to determine the most effective methods for communicating the science of microbiomics to winemakers and growers, to determine what adaptations need to be made to scientific content to make it relevant and applicable for target audiences, and to investigate the extent to which scientists incorporate the practical experience of winemakers into their own research.
Could you write a few sentences about yourself, your hobbies, interests?
Outside of academia, I love to explore. Whether that be a new country, a new coffee shop, new cuisine or new people, I always seek out opportunities and experiences for growth. In my free time, I also enjoy reading non-fiction books and spending time with animals.
